THE 2016 VINTAGE

The wet winter and spring gave way to a long period of drought which lasted all summer. An Indian summer arrived after a brief rainy period in mid-September that was highly desirable at the end of ripening. The month of October was particularly dry. Cool night-time temperatures combined with warm days resulted in deeply-coloured wines that are also fresh and fruity. 2016 was a year of paradoxes that accounts for this beautiful vintage.

Tastings notes

These wines are very fruity, with aromas of red fruit and blackcurrant alongside floral overtones reminiscent of violet. They combine the tannic power of great vintages with a deliciously velvety texture and rare smooth, powerful, and generous on the palate. Their relativy high level of acidity gives them an admirable freshness and tremendous balance, without any hardness.

THE 2017 VINTAGE

A warm, sunny spring accelerated vine growth. Two incidents of frost in late April served as a reminder to winegrowers that viticulture is fragile and that nature cannot be tamed.

The water deficit was a distinguishing feature of the vintage. However, thanks to significant rainfall in June, the vines were spared from the drought. Above-average sunshine and a spell of very hot weather, moderated by relatively cool nights, also resulted in favourable winegrowing conditions. The outstanding fruit is reflected in our wines, which have managed to preserve the freshness vital to the balance we always seek. Weather during the month of September was fine for picking, which took place under ideal conditions.
2017 has all the hallmarks of an exceptional vintage.

Tastings notes

This blend is a beautiful, bright ruby-red colour with very fresh, fruity aromas. The vibrancy of the bouquet follows through to the palate, accompanied by notes of red fruit, blackcurrant and cherry.

Well-structured and vivacious with fine, silky tannins and pronounced minerality. The aftertaste is wonderfully long and bursting with delicious flavours.

THE 2015 VINTAGE

The unusual weather in 2015 was responsible for producing a vintage of extremely fine quality. Above and beyond the intrinsic elegance, balance, and complexity of Clarendelle wines, this vintage is unquestionably delicious. The warm spring was conducive to even flowering, followed by even warmer temperatures in June and July that led vigorous vine growth enhanced by water reserves accumulated over the rainy winter. The more temperate months of August and September, without excessive sunshine, were favourable to good ripening and refined aromatic expression. Autumn weather was ideal for maturing tannin in the grape skins. The harvest took place relatively late and the fruit was of very high quality.

Tastings notes

2015: A delicious vintage! The wines have a deep garnet-red colour and feature excellent balance. They also have noticeable, but moderate acidity as well as crunchy ripe red fruit flavours, along with hints of spice and liquorice. The tannin is round, smooth, and velvety. The delicious aftertaste is rich and concentrated.

THE 2014 VINTAGE

2014 will long be remembered because of the fine Indian summer that was vital to the quality of the vintage. After a beautiful spring which meant that the growing season was off to a good start, summer weather was more challenging, which slowed down ripening… However, the month of September was marvellous: dry and very sunny, with temperatures close to 30°C – and just the right amount or rain to enable the vines to regain their vigour. This beautiful Indian summer, with cool nights, was conducive to excellent ripening, and the grapes were in tip-top condition.

Tastings notes

A deep colour and a soft bouquet of liquorice and blackcurrant. The wine has violet and slightly toasty nuances on the palate. The texture is velvety and the flavour altogether powerful and elegant.

There is a wonderful refined balance between high-quality tannin, concentration, tension, and freshness. A lovely vintage for Clarendelle!

THE 2013 VINTAGE

2013 was a veritable obstacle course for winegrowers. A wet spring upset flowering, but vine diseases were kept at bay thanks to warm dry summer weather. The harvest took place later than usual, with alternating periods of sun and rain. These conditions led to a low yield, but modern winemaking techniques and expertise, combined with careful attention, make it possible to produce great wines every year.

Tastings notes

This wine’s paramount feature is its freshness thanks to good acidity that underlines its intrinsic fruitiness. It is very well-balanced and has a brilliant, intense, ruby-red colour. The nose is complex and fruity, with tangy redcurrant and blueberry aromas. The tannin is elegant and silky. The acidity on the palate perfectly complements the attractive fruit and confers an attractive lightness. There is a long aftertaste with a beautiful fruity finish.

A vintage in which Clarendelle is fully worthy of its reputation!

THE 2012 VINTAGE

The 2012 growing season necessitated constant attention in the vineyard. However, the beautiful warm, sunny summer weather was conducive to a high-quality vintage. This was nevertheless uneven from bud break – disturbed by a cool, wet month of April – to véraison (colour change), which took place over a long period. Fortunately, however, the months of July and August were ideally warm and dry. A famous saying in Bordeaux is that “août fit le moût” (August is decisive for the quality of the wine). The grapes were able to mature, but careful sorting was essential when picking. The month of September was sunny and ultimately confirmed our hopes for a very fine vintage.

Tastings notes

The wine has a brilliant, intense garnet-red colour. The bouquet is complex and fruity, with ripe berry overtones. Great care was taken to extract silky tannin. The fresh acidity contributes to the wine’s attractive fruitiness and delicious flavours. Furthermore, there is a long, powerful aftertaste and a beautiful finish. Altogether smooth, elegant, and balanced.

THE 2011 VINTAGE

Spring 2011 was the driest since 1949. The dry and warm weather caused the growing season to start exceptionally early: flowering and fruit set began around the 15th of May, i.e. a full three weeks ahead of usual. A good balance was achieved thanks to a few showers, typical of the Bordeaux region, and conducive to vine growth and ripening. September was mostly dry, and the grapes were in superb condition; the harvest took place serenely under clear blue skies.

These excellent weather conditions mean that the 2011 vintage is a great success!

Tastings notes

The wine has a deep, brilliant, intense red colour. The bouquet is complex and fruity, with blackberry and blackcurrant overtones. The tannin is firm, but elegant. There is also great acidity, which contributes freshness and elegance. Furthermore, the wine has a long, powerful aftertaste and a beautiful finish.

THE 2010 VINTAGE

2010 was a very dry year, especially arid during the growing season. The resulting lack of rain contributed to the concentration in the grapes’ flavour compounds. Cool night-time temperatures locked in the aromas and maintained a good level of acidity in wines reflecting relatively high degrees of alcohol. This vintage, with 2009, will unquestionably prove to be one of the very best of the last decade.

Tastings notes

Deep brilliant red colour. Beautifully fresh with very ripe red fruit, displaying raspberry and blackcurrant flavours on the palate. This wine is extremely rich and balanced, reflecting silky tannins with a smooth and elegant finish.

THE 2009 VINTAGE

The 2009 vintage was unanimously greeted as a very exceptional year largely thanks to an outstanding climate.

The growing season started with rain in Spring, but flowering took place under optimum conditions and the rest of the season was dry and sunny. Generous sunshine and warm temperatures in July and August, with alternating cool nights and hot days were particularly conducive to perfect ripening and concentration of aromas and anthocyanins. The beautiful sunshine from September until mid-October enabled optimal picking according to each plot’s individual ripeness.

Tastings notes

The wine shows beautiful balance. It has a deep, almost inky crimson colour. Although present, the alcohol is perfectly balanced with tannins and freshness. There are delicious cherry, blackberry, and blackcurrant flavours as well as subtle chocolate overtones on the palate, which is altogether opulent and soft. The tannin is distinctive, but silky, accounting for volume and length. The paramount characteristics are concentration and intensity, but underpinned by softness and finesse.

THE 2007 VINTAGE

The weather during the 2007 growing season would have been catastrophic were it not for warm dry weather in September and early October. This beautiful Indian summer accounts for the quality of the vintage.
The temperatures in July and August were lower than the seasonal averages, which cancelled the head-start in April. The lack of dry, warm weather also meant that there was insufficient water stress. This is when the decisive change in the weather occurred, and summer finally made an appearance in September and October.
Ripening took place gradually, and we were able to wait. The harvest was late: the end of September for the first Merlot grapes and mid-to-late October for the last Cabernet Sauvignon. This slow growth and ripening were very positive for the grapes.
The heart of our blend consists of lots of Pessac-Léognan featuring ripe, fruity Cabernets with great acidity. Most of the Merlot wines come from the Right Bank, which is most often the case for Clarendelle, because they give a rich, ripe, delicious flavour.

Tastings notes

Dark, attractive, brilliant garnet-red colour. The bouquet asserts itself even before the wine is swirled in the glass. It starts off very fresh on the palate, with delicious blackcurrant and blackberry flavours. The taste profile is beautifully soft and subtle, with smooth tannin.
The wine’s fullness and balance make it very enjoyable as of now.

THE 2006 VINTAGE

The weather during the 2006 growing season was sunnier than the thirty-year average for the months of May, June, September, and October. It was also warmer than usual, with a record-breaking month of July, and the effect was accentuated by dryness that had set in since spring and lasted until showers arrived in the month of August.
Alternating periods of rain and and a heat wave ended up stretching out the harvest, which lasted practically two months from start to finish. All the winegrowers we work with picked their grapes in late September. This was neither too early nor too late. The fruit was good and ripe thanks in large part to the leaf thinning and bunch thinning that had been done previously.

Tastings notes

The wines have a striking, almost brilliant red colour. The nose is still rather closed at the present time, but shows powerful red fruit aromas. There are also overtones of blackcurrant, blackberry, fig, and hazelnut. The Cabernets had a fine colour as well as fresh, subtle fruit. The blend includes some from the Médoc as well.
The wine starts out quite vivacious, going on to reveal smooth tannin. The Merlot once again provides good structure because the tannin has considerable character, but is delicate and non-astringent. The balance is fresh and attractive, altogether in Clarendelle’s signature style.

THE 2005 VINTAGE

2005 will long be remembered as a year of drought. Accumulated rainfall during the growing season amounted to 480 mm, far below the usual average of approximately 800 mm.
Fortunately, the vines adapted to the dry conditions, and this drought did not cause any problems. On the contrary – the grapes were very concentrated and exceptionally ripe.

Tastings notes

The most striking feature of 2005 Clarendelle Rouge is its intensity. It is altogether rich and remarkably intense on both the middle palate and aftertaste. Fairly high acidity accentuates a host of fruity flavors.
2005 Clarendelle Rouge is wonderfully balanced. It starts out beautifully and gradually builds up to a powerful, concentrated middle palate with plenty of volume. The rich, smooth flavour then goes into a very long, elegant aftertaste.
The aromas in the bouquet carry over beautifully onto the palate: red and black fruits, spices, flowers, vanilla, and mineral overtones.
The tannins are becoming softer over time, making way for a velvety texture and a very fruity flavor

THE 2004 VINTAGE

Bud break occurred on time, in mid-March/early April, after a cool, wet winter.
This bode well for healthy yields, which was confirmed by quick, even flowering with only a few shot berries. The large potential crop size was reduced thanks to pruning and green harvesting. The warm, dry weather in June and July was conducive to good flowering and fruit set.
The weather in August, September, and October was warm, but not excessively so. This made for slow ripening that enhanced the development of aromatic compounds. Upon maturity, sugar levels were good and yields were low. Technicity combined with phenolic maturity and aromatic freshness: 2004 was really the year for master wine makers.
The red wine grape harvest began in late September, but was staggered to allow each grape variety to attain peak ripeness.

Tastings notes

Thanks to the large percentage of Merlot from Bordeaux’s Right Bank, Clarendelle is a deeply-colored, concentrated, well-structured, and full-bodied wine. It has a bouquet of fresh red fruit (raspberry, cherry, and blackberry) as well as overtones of spice and licorice. Cabernet contributes freshness along with floral and mineral notes.
2004 Clarendelle has a deep color, beautiful acidity, and a silky texture. Like all the best wines of the vintage, it has fine ageing potential.

THE 2003 VINTAGE

2003 was without a doubt a very exceptional year in terms of the weather. Although it did not beat the record for lowest rainfall, attained in 1961 (258 mm) for the period April to September inclusive, 2003 comes close behind with 263 mm. The hundred-year average is 410 mm and in the wettest year; in 1992, 697 mm of rain fell. However, in terms of temperature, all the records were broken in 2003.

Tastings notes

Clarendelle red 2003 reveals a deep purple colour with a nose of black currants, berries, liquorice with a hint of spice, vanilla, roasted coffee and black chocolate. The well balanced body is followed by a deep mid palate and supple tannins that lead to a textured and fleshy long finish.
